  • To contribute to the artistic reputation and commercial marketability of young artists

Curator's Statement

Collecting contemporary art is very much on my mind and is my passion. So when Carol Fitzwilliam asked me to be both a Founding Member and the Curator of the newly formed FEMMARTE, I was honored and excited. I saw even more of an opportunity to raise awareness for female Canadian artists. Raise the self-confidence not only among artists, collectors, and galleries but in the art world in general. A notable collection fosters interest beyond boarders; hence, Femmarte will play a part in raising the profile of Canadian art.

FEMMARTE will collect work from at least twenty female artists over the next five years. The boundaries of art in the 21st century are wide, ranging from paintings to video art. My job as Curator will be to use both my experience as an artist and gallerist to make intelligent, informed decisions. I will carefully balance the selections I make between the excellent works by mature artists and the avant-garde.

I recognize that not all of the pieces I choose will be ones you might choose for your
personal collection. However, please remember that the survival of contemporary art depends on collections—collections are the pillars of contemporary art’s survival! As a member of FEMMARTE, you are obviously committed to art. Thank you for joining us on this adventure to support Canadian artists.
